Gordons Bio
Gordon Benson commenced stable work as a strapper in 1972. From 1972 to 1978 he was employed by No1 trainers at Randwick , T.J Smith, J.B Cummings, N.C Begg and A.G Bentley.
During this period he progressed from basic stablehand duties to all facets of stablehand work to travelling foreman with overall responsibility to the top line performers at interstate carnivals up until the death of A. G Bentley.
From 1978 Gordon was employed by No.1 AJC trainer RH Thompson at Randwick as stable foreman. He held this position until 1980 when he applied for and was granted a No2. AJC trainer’s license.
From 1980-1986 Gordon trained at Warwick farm in Sydney beginning with a leased block of 16 stables by the AJC.
This period saw him increasing his racing clientele and during this same period he had success with Belltoller (STC Christmas cup) and in 1988 his golden slipper entry (Sea Swell) which ran a close 5th behind Bounding Away.
In 1986 Gordon was granted a No.1 trainer’s license by the Newcastle, Hunter and Central Coast Racing Association and moved to Newcastle to train from a block of 24 stables adjacent to Broad Meadow racecourse.
Also during this period he travelled to Melbourne with stable representatives to the VRC spring carnival. This was met with success with the winner of the Sandown guineas. GROUP 2 WT Clark stakes (LR) 2nd Carbone Club stakes (LR) 2nd: 4th placing in the GROUP 1 Caulfield guineas, VRC Country Cup - Oaks day and the Lin Lithgow stakes on Melbourne cup day.
